Leipzig keeps the door open for Gruda
RB Leipzig stops Gruda's farewell – is he staying after all?
RB Leipzig has made a last-minute change to its farewell plans before the final Bundesliga home game against FC St. Pauli. While Xaver Schlager and Kosta Nedeljković are to be bid farewell around kickoff, an originally planned farewell for Brajan Gruda has been canceled. This seems like a deliberately set signal: The future of the attacking player apparently has not yet been finally decided beyond the summer.
Change of plans before the home game
For the season finale in their own stadium, RB Leipzig is planning several program points: Among other things, the promotion team from 2016 is to be honored on the occasion of the ten-year anniversary. In addition, farewells from the current squad were planned.
According to the current status, Schlager and Nedeljković are each to receive a bouquet of flowers. With Gruda, however, there was a turnaround: The 21-year-old will not be bid farewell. According to information from BILD, this decision was made at short notice – and only after longer discussions that are said to have taken place during the week.
Gruda remains an open topic for the summer
That Leipzig is foregoing a farewell for a loan player is rarely a coincidence in professional football. Usually, loans are publicly "closed" at the end of the season when no sporting or economic continuation is planned. Leipzig's decision not to include Gruda in this framework fits more with a scenario in which both sides – club and player – are deliberately leaving the door open.
The situation is complicated mainly because of the contractual starting point: Gruda is under contract with Brighton & Hove Albion until 2028. A permanent solution therefore depends not only on Leipzig's sporting wishes, but above all on reaching an agreement with the Premier League club – and on the financial structure.
According to information from BILD, Brighton is said to be demanding a transfer fee of 30 million euros for a permanent transfer. For Leipzig, this would be a significant investment that would have to be weighed not only in sporting terms, but also in the context of the squad and budget: A high fixed amount ties up resources that may be lacking elsewhere and increases the pressure for immediate performance.
Accordingly, models that balance risk and planning security between the clubs are obvious:
- A renewed loan would help Leipzig in the short term without having to pay a large sum immediately – but Brighton would have less commitment.
- A loan with a purchase option would be the flexible variant for RB, as the club could postpone the final decision into the future.
- A purchase obligation, on the other hand, would rather serve Brighton's interests, to get early clarity about a later sale – for Leipzig, it would only be attractive if sporting criteria or appearance thresholds are realistically achievable and the conditions are viable.
Ole Werner clearly highlights Gruda's value
That Leipzig values Gruda highly in sporting terms has recently been clearly stated by coach Ole Werner. About the attacking player he said: "He was an absolute reinforcement for us and still is. It has paid off for both sides."
Even with a view to the summer, Werner remained cautious, but set a clearly positive framework: "What happens in the summer, we'll see. But the fact that we all really enjoy working with him here, that he also likes being here and that we play a kind of football in which he can help us and in which he can also continue to develop, is a good prerequisite."
This last point in particular is central to the assessment: When a coach publicly emphasizes that the player profile and playing idea fit together, it increases the likelihood that a club is internally working on a continuation – even if the economic conditions are difficult.
Bottom line: The canceled farewell is not yet a decision for a stay. But it is an indication that RB Leipzig does not want to draw a line under Brajan Gruda – and that talks with Brighton are likely to gain real importance after the end of the season.
