Media Collection, Children's Library, and Learning and Reading Bar
The Public Library – Anna Seghers offers over 130,000 media in its central library, making it one of the central points for public literature and information supply in Mainz. The collection is broad and is aimed not only at classic avid readers. Fiction invites relaxed reading, while non-fiction supports school, studies, training, work, and personal development. Additionally, there are sheet music, films, magazines, audiobooks, large print books, and music CDs. This way, a single library visit can combine multiple interests: a novel for the evening, an audiobook for the journey, a film for the weekend, or a specialist book for a specific project. Research is conducted through the online catalog, which allows for a search of the entire media collection.
For children and teenagers, there are dedicated areas in the central library with age-appropriate media. The children's library provides non-fiction books, stories, magazines, comics, music on CD, film DVDs, Tonies, and other offerings. This addresses different media habits. Younger children can discover stories, parents can select suitable picture books and read-aloud books together with them, and older children can find material for school, leisure, and their own interests. Tonies and audio media offer a way to experience stories without lengthy reading. The library is thus not only a place for borrowing but also a space where children can independently discover media and develop their own topics.
The Learning and Reading Bar complements the offerings for children and teenagers with opportunities for reading and learning. It can be interesting for schoolchildren looking for a suitable place for focused work, research, or preparation for classes and exams. Adults also benefit from the educational mission of the library, as the Public Library provides people of all ages with free access to information and knowledge. At the locations, there are research opportunities and internet access; in the central library, free Wi-Fi is also available. This combination of printed media, digital research opportunities, and suitable learning areas makes the location at Anna-Seghers-Platz relevant for many educational situations.
A special component is the Paul-Lehn Library in the central library. It was opened on August 14, 2019, and is dedicated to literature on current events and societal issues. The collection is supplemented monthly with new volumes. The books are specially marked and bear an ex-libris by the Mainz artist Simone Frieling. This creates a focus within the public library that encourages engagement with societal past, present, and future. Those seeking not only entertainment but also a deeper engagement with political, social, or cultural questions will find a curated addition to the general collection here.
The wide thematic range explains why the Anna-Seghers Library is interesting for very different target groups. Families use children's offerings, teenagers the learning opportunities, adults fiction and non-fiction, music enthusiasts sheet music and CDs, film fans DVDs and digital media. Through the online catalog, the visit can be well prepared. The collection is made accessible not only on-site but also partially digitally. Thus, the library combines the classic function of a city library with contemporary offerings for research, entertainment, learning, and media literacy.

For travel by bus and train, the libraries of the city of Mainz refer to the stop Hauptbahnhof. All buses and trains stopping at Mainz Central Station lead near the location. From there, Anna-Seghers-Platz is within walking distance. This connection makes the library particularly attractive for those who do not wish to or cannot use a car. Schoolchildren, students, and commuters can combine a library visit with their daily commute. The return or pickup of reserved media can also be done without additional detours.
The central location is helpful not only in terms of transport but also organizationally. Those with an appointment in the city center can research, return media, or browse the collection before or after their appointment. The location is also interesting for people seeking a quiet place with access to information. The central library offers research opportunities and free Wi-Fi. This can be useful for short digital tasks, searching the online catalog, or preparing a learning project. The library does not automatically replace a workspace for every situation but provides public infrastructure for reading, research, and education.
For precise orientation on-site, it is advisable to distinguish between the visitor address of the central library and the administrative address. For normal visits, Anna-Seghers-Platz is the most important detail. In official contact details, Bonifatius-Turm A and Rhabanusstraße 3 are also mentioned. Those wishing to contact the central public library by phone or email can reach it at the phone number provided by the city of Mainz. The general email address of the library is suitable for inquiries about the service offerings, usage, and organizational matters.
The proximity to the main station can also be an advantage in bad weather or tight time frames, as the routes from the public transport network remain short. For first-time visitors, it is advisable to orient themselves by the Bonifaziustürme and Anna-Seghers-Platz. Before traveling by bus or train, current schedules and possible construction sites should be checked. The library itself publishes the location information and refers to accessibility by public transport. This makes planning the visit simple, regardless of whether the journey is from Mainz city center, a district, or the surrounding area.
Parking at the Public Library Anna Seghers
Those visiting the Public Library – Anna Seghers by car will find the most important parking option directly in the vicinity of the Bonifaziustürme. The city of Mainz lists paid parking spaces in the Bonifaziustürme underground garage. The entrance is located on Bonifaziusstraße. Additionally, the Cityport parking garage is mentioned as a nearby parking option. This provides clear guidance for visitors who need to transport media boxes, strollers, or larger bags and therefore do not wish to travel by public transport.
Since these are paid parking spaces, drivers should check the applicable rates, entry conditions, and opening hours of the parking garages before arriving. The available parking spaces may vary in occupancy depending on the time of day, day of the week, or events in the city center. A guarantee for a free space cannot be derived from the general location information. Therefore, those planning a short library visit should allow enough time for parking search. Especially on Thursdays with extended opening hours and Saturday mornings, the underground garage can be interesting for an uncomplicated visit.
The Bonifaziustürme underground garage is relevant for orientation because it is directly connected to the library's location. When navigating, the destination should not only be the library address but possibly also Bonifaziusstraße as the access road. After parking, the paths from the vicinity of the towers lead to Anna-Seghers-Platz and the central library. Visitors with limited mobility should check in advance which barrier-free paths and accesses are currently usable. The official location page indicates the library as barrier-free.
Those who are flexible can park at the outskirts or at another suitable parking spot and cover the remaining distance by bus and train. Due to the proximity to Mainz Central Station, the location is generally well integrated into the public transport network. For many people, traveling without a car is therefore the simplest option. This is especially true for a short visit where only a medium is to be picked up or returned. The return box outside of opening hours can also help to organize returns more flexibly; however, the notes regarding Tonies and eReaders should be observed.
For a relaxed arrival, a short preparation is advisable: check opening hours, note the address or access road, possibly search for the desired medium in the online catalog, and choose the parking option. Those coming with children or taking many media can plan the Bonifaziustürme underground garage as a nearby option. Those who want to travel quickly and cost-effectively can orient themselves at the main station and use buses or trains. Regardless of the mode of transport, Anna-Seghers-Platz remains the central destination address of the Mainz library.

In addition to media lending and digital services, exhibitions and events play an important role. The city of Mainz describes the concept of the Public Library with a focus on aesthetics and knowledge transfer. An annual highlight is the large media exhibition in summer, which is complemented by a summer riddle. In addition, there are events and offerings for various target groups. The library can thus be a place where topics are not only read but also presented, discussed, and discovered together.
For people who have little experience with libraries, open library tours are a practical way to get to know the location. In the central library, there are tours titled Library – How Does It Work? as well as short formats called Library Compact!. According to the published information, these offerings take place regularly and can be attended without prior registration. The meeting point is the service desk. The exact times should be checked before the visit via the current event calendar or the library page.
The Paul-Lehn Library also stands for the ambition to go beyond mere entertainment. The collection deals with current societal issues and the question of how past, present, and future are interconnected. Through regular additions, this area remains dynamic. Older images may not accurately depict the location, signage, or interior areas anymore. Therefore, it is sensible to view photos together with current contact and location details.

Families often use the children's library and look for read-aloud books, comics, Tonies, or films. The Public Library – Anna Seghers is the central public library of the city of Mainz and is located at Anna-Seghers-Platz in the distinctive Bonifaziustürme. Those looking for a well-accessible library in Mainz will find a versatile place for information, education, entertainment, and social interaction. The proximity to Mainz Central Station makes the central library particularly convenient for working professionals, students, families, schoolchildren, and visitors to the city. The offerings go far beyond classic books: available for loan are non-fiction, fiction, sheet music, films, magazines, audiobooks, large print books, and music CDs. In the children's library and the learning and reading bar, there are age-appropriate media as well as opportunities for reading and learning. The physical collection is complemented by digital offerings that can be accessed from home around the clock. The opening hours, central location, free Wi-Fi in the central library, and extensive media collection make the Anna-Seghers Library an important address in Mainz's cultural and educational offerings. Note: The library is closed on Mondays. It is advisable to check the current opening hours and notices from the city of Mainz before visiting.
Opening Hours of the Public Library Anna Seghers in Mainz
The opening hours are among the most important search criteria for the Public Library – Anna Seghers. The central library at Anna-Seghers-Platz is closed on Mondays. From Tuesday to Wednesday and on Friday, visits are possible from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Thursday offers the longest regular opening day from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. On Saturday, the library opens from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This model caters to different daily routines: those who have time in the morning can use the library just as much as people who want to pick up, return, or research media after work. Thursday evenings are particularly convenient for working professionals and students, while Saturday mornings provide families and readers from Mainz with an additional opportunity.
For visits, it is important to distinguish between general opening hours and specific service times. In the children's library, information is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Thursdays from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Fridays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The service desk of the central library also assists with questions about media, library cards, extensions, reservations, or digital offerings. Since opening hours can change on holidays, during maintenance work, or for operational reasons, visitors should pay attention to short-term notices on the official pages of the libraries in the city of Mainz. The return box in front of the central library allows for the return of media even outside of opening hours. However, Tonies and eReaders should not be dropped into the return box; return machines are available during opening hours.
The opening hours are also important for people who plan only a short visit. A search in the online catalog can clarify in advance whether a specific book, film, magazine, or audiobook is available. Through the online account, media deadlines can be managed and extensions or reservations checked. The city of Mainz also points to open library tours, where interested parties can learn how to use the library. These tours take place in the central library and are aimed at people who are not yet familiar with the offerings or want to use the library card, catalog, and borrowing more confidently. Those who visit the Anna-Seghers Library regularly can specifically incorporate Thursday until 7:00 PM and Saturday morning into their personal weekly planning.
The address at Anna-Seghers-Platz thus combines clear service times with a well-planned stay. Whether for single loans, returns, focused research, use of Wi-Fi, or visiting the children's library: the opening hours cover many typical concerns. For spontaneous visits, it remains advisable to check the official information of the Mainz libraries on the same day. This way, special openings, closure days, and changes in service can be reliably considered.
Library Mainz at the Main Station: Address and Directions
The Public Library – Anna Seghers is located at Anna-Seghers-Platz in 55118 Mainz. The central library is situated in the Bonifaziustürme and is also described in municipal information as Bonifatius-Turm A or Rhabanusstraße 3. The location near Mainz Central Station is a significant practical advantage. Those arriving by train in Mainz can integrate the library into their visit to the city center. The location is also easily accessible for people from other districts, as the main station serves as an important transport hub.
Digital Offers, Events, and Special Areas
The Public Library – Anna Seghers combines the classic library visit with digital offerings that can be used independently of opening hours. Through the Onleihe Rheinland-Pfalz and other providers, eBooks, digital audiobooks, magazines, and newspapers are available. The digital offerings also include eLearning offerings, OverDrive, eKidz, Tigerbooks, Brockhaus, Freegal Music, and Filmfriend. This allows library users to read, learn, listen, discover music, or select films from home. Typically, a valid library card or registration with the respective service is required.
The online catalog supports the search in the library's media collection. Users can research by titles, authors, topics, or media types. The catalog is also accessible via a free mobilOPAC app for Android and iOS. Those who already know which book or audiobook they are looking for can prepare their visit accordingly. The extension of the card validity and certain account management functions are also possible online. In case of technical problems or questions, the library refers to the telephone and written contact with the central library.
The offerings are aimed at different age groups. For children, digital formats are available through eKidz and Tigerbooks, which can accompany reading and stories in a media-appropriate way. Brockhaus offers reference works and special content for children and teenagers. Freegal Music adds digital music offerings to the collection, while Filmfriend provides access to selected films. This variety also makes the library interesting for people who do not regularly borrow printed books. They can test digital offerings and use the library card as access to a wide media world.
The combination of general media collection, children's offerings, learning opportunities, digital services, exhibitions, and tours makes the Anna-Seghers Library a versatile educational institution. It serves as a service point, learning place, media center, and cultural meeting point in the Mainz area.

Great city library. I currently live in Bogotá and was able to easily register for the city library through Onleihe RLP. I have now managed to download my first Onleihe book onto my Tolino :-) Seval Yasar from the staff team helped me a lot with this (via email). That's great customer service. Thank you very much. I look forward to visiting the city library again when I live in Mainz again. Daniel Schmitt

The Anna-Seghers Library in Mainz is visually appealing and is great for borrowing books. The staff are friendly as well. However, the noise level is a big problem. Especially during peak times, it gets very loud, and there is hardly any attention paid to maintaining quiet in the study areas. Conversations, running children, and generally loud behavior make it very difficult to concentrate. Anyone looking for a quiet place to study will unfortunately be disappointed here, as the library does not live up to its claim of being a quiet retreat.
