Sky Night: Dance Theater under the Starry Sky

Five dancers, an infinite cosmos, and the big questions of growing up: With Sky Night, Joan Clevillé presents a poetic dance theater piece about friendship, identity, change, and belonging on the U17 stage at the Staatstheater Mainz.

When the Night Sky Becomes the Set

The production opens an imaginary space between star maps and inner landscapes. Born from a passion for the universe, it creates a playful journey through uncertainty, departure, and the search for one’s own place. The cosmic vastness serves as a mirror for human experiences: Each movement tells of closeness, distance, and the desire to find stability in a changing world.

Choreography Between Humor and Movement

Joan Clevillé's direction and choreography blend contemporary dance with theater and narrative moments. Breath, voice, and body enter into a lively dialogue. Five dancers confront the mysteries of the universe with shared energy, subtle humor, and precise, expressive acting.

Music, Light, and Cosmic Atmosphere

The music by Luke Sutherland accompanies the stage action with an atmospheric soundscape. The set design by Matthias Strahm creates a sensual resonant space where movements unfold like orbits, shooting stars, or small cosmic collisions. Lighting moods and acoustics intensify the theater atmosphere into an immediate stage experience.

A Production for Curious Explorers

Sky Night is aimed at an audience aged twelve and above and combines artistic depth with accessibility. The dramaturgy follows no linear plot but develops a dynamic narrative about self-becoming from body images, text fragments, and group dynamics. The production invites viewers to see their own uncertainty not as a weakness but as the beginning of a discovery.

Conclusion: A Poetic Look into the Unknown

Visitors can expect an atmospheric dance theater piece full of movement, sound, and cosmic imagery. Sky Night transforms the U17 into a space for thought and play, where friendship, identity, and the secrets of the universe merge. Anyone wanting to experience contemporary stage art up close should not miss this journey beneath the imaginary stars.
