How young people can shape democracy

How can children and young people engage politically, and what is needed for more intergenerational justice? The public specialist discussion organized by the Interdisciplinary Center for Educational Research at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz brings together science, politics, administration, educational practice, and civil society.

Impulse lectures with a scientific perspective

The focus is on current challenges and concrete ways to effectively involve young people in democratic processes. Three impulse lectures will open the evening: Prof. Dr. Tanja Betz will speak about young people in political consulting, Dr. Andreas Busen will explore the relationship between children and democracy, and Prof. Dr. Friederike Wapler will place the participation rights of children and young people in a constitutional and international legal context.

Panel discussion on intergenerational justice

In the subsequent panel discussion, different perspectives from education, children and youth policy, migration, finance, and local affairs will converge. Among the participants are representatives from FiscalFuture, the Refugee Council of Rhineland-Palatinate, the State Youth Advisory Board of Rhineland-Palatinate, Teachers for Future Germany, and local politicians. The conversation will be moderated by Clemens Brüchert.

Dialogue, exchange, and event experience

The event combines expert knowledge with public exchange. A break provides space for conversations before the panel discusses central demands and measures for more intergenerational justice. To conclude, a get-together invites attendees to continue discussions and make new contacts.

Conclusion

The specialist discussion shows that education for democracy and youth participation are not fringe topics, but are shaping the future of societal coexistence. Those who want to deeply understand political education, experience different voices, and engage in conversations about participation opportunities will find a concentrated and diverse event experience in the Old Mensa. Participation is possible both on-site and via livestream.
