Christmas City Mainz: Advent Light Splendor in front of the Cathedral
From November 26 to December 30, 2026, the city center of Mainz transforms into a festive Christmas city. The historic Christmas market in the Cathedral squares serves as the center, complemented by the Mainz WinterTime markets and the New Winter market at Neubrunnenplatz. Visitors will experience regional diversity, a wintry market atmosphere, and atmospheric Advent moments in the midst of Mainz's old town.
Historic Christmas Market with Great Tradition
Against the backdrop of the over 1,000-year-old Cathedral of St. Martin, the decorated stalls at the market, in the Höfchen, and at Liebfrauenplatz shine brightly. The history of the Mainz Christmas market dates back to the Nikolose Market of 1788. Since 1975, it has taken place in its current form as the Historic Christmas Market.
Crafts, Gift Ideas, and Winter Delights
Between Renaissance façades, a sky of lights, and festively decorated stalls, market-goers can discover special handicrafts, handmade toys, and atmospheric gift ideas. The scent of roasted almonds, hearty winter specialties, and hot drinks accompanies the stroll. An eleven-meter-high Christmas pyramid featuring Mainz personalities, hand-carved nativity figures, and a music box with 18 angel figures are among the notable attractions.
Several Markets in the City Center of Mainz
In addition to the historic Christmas market, the Christmas city includes the Mainz WinterTime markets at Schillerplatz, in front of the train station, in the Hopfengarten, and in the castle courtyard. Additionally, the New Winter market at Neubrunnenplatz invites for a winter shopping experience. A Glühwein Walk connects selected market locations with mulled drinks, snacks, and an exclusive cup. The separate ticket costs 27 euros.
Opening Hours and Visit Planning
The historic Christmas market is open from November 26 to December 23, 2026: Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM, and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. On December 23, the market closes early at 7:00 PM. The additional WinterTime markets and the New Winter market open until December 30, 2026, depending on the location with varying times.
Well Accessible and Barrier-Free
The Christmas city can be reached by numerous lines of Mainz mobility. Central stops include Höfchen, Rheingoldhalle/Council House, and Fischtor. Parking garages like Am Brand, Rathaus, Kaufhof, Karstadt, Kronberger Hof, and the riverbank are nearby. The historic Christmas market is designed to be barrier-free; designated stalls, wheelchair-accessible ramps, and barrier-free restrooms facilitate a comfortable visit.
The Christmas City Mainz combines market tradition, crafts, seasonal goods, and culinary winter delights with the special architecture of Mainz's old town. Those who want to experience the Advent season with all their senses will discover festive squares, lovingly designed stalls, and regional shopping variety during a stroll. A visit to Mainz makes the Christmas shopping an atmospheric experience.
