Dana von Suffrin reads Toxibaby in Mainz

On Wednesday, December 9, 2026, Dana von Suffrin will present her new novel Toxibaby at the Kakadu Bar in Mainz. The reading will be followed by a discussion starting at 8 PM, inviting you into the contradictory world of a love that becomes unbalanced between devotion, dependence, and intellectual competition.

A Love Story with Sharp Edges

Heartchen loves Toxibaby and Toxibaby loves Heartchen. The two move in together and adopt a dog, but their shared happiness remains fragile. Heartchen is a celebrated millennial writer who has achieved everything yet remains unhappy. Toxibaby, in their early forties, sees themselves as bearing the weight of the world: brilliant, angry, and full of conflicting needs.

Dana von Suffrin tells the story of a relationship in her novel that promises salvation, insight, and redemption at the same time. The narrative tension arises from the constant swing between closeness and hurt, romantic charge and psychological violence. With dark humor and linguistic precision, the author dissects the relationship incapacity of an entire generation.

Literary Language Art Between Wit and Abyss

Toxibaby combines pop literature with a psychological relationship novel. The characters speak from a present where self-realization, emotional overwhelm, and societal crisis experience intertwine. Dana von Suffrin's style remains simultaneously sharp-tongued, vulnerable, and full of great comedic energy.

The author was born in 1985 in Munich, studied political science, Jewish history and culture, as well as general and comparative literature at universities in Munich, Naples, and Jerusalem, and received a doctorate on the role of science and ideology in early Zionism. For her literary work, she has received several awards, including the Klaus-Michael-Kühne Prize, the Ernst-Hoferichter Prize, the Tukan Prize, and the Chamisso Prize. Her novel Starting Over was on the long list for the German Book Prize in 2024.

Reading Atmosphere at the Kakadu Bar

The event will take place at the Kakadu Bar in the Restaurant Zum grünen Kakadu at Gutenbergplatz. The bar opens an hour before the event begins. This allows time for a drink and preparation for the author encounter before the literary experience. No bar service will take place during the reading.

The evening will be moderated by Ariane Binder. The focus will be on excerpts from Toxibaby as well as discussions about contemporary literature, toxic relationship patterns, self-assertion, and the cultural significance of a novel that connects intimate experience with social diagnosis.

Conclusion: An Author in Tune with the Present

Dana von Suffrin's reading promises an evening filled with language art, dark humor, and emotional tension. Those wishing to experience contemporary literature with pointed characters, precise observation, and great literary quality will find a special opportunity for a direct author encounter in Mainz.
