JOYLAND in the Shell Cinema: A touching love story from Pakistan
On January 27, 2027, FILMZ will screen the highly acclaimed film JOYLAND at the Shell Cinema of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The story centers on Haider, a dreamy and unemployed husband who struggles to find his place in his patriarchal family.
Between family tradition and personal freedom
Haider increasingly feels pressure because he does not conform to his family's traditional role. A job offer as a background dancer in an erotic theater fundamentally changes his daily life. There, he meets a dancer with whom he develops an intense connection.
A film about love, identity, and societal boundaries
JOYLAND tells a queer love story with great emotional closeness. The staging combines intimate moments with a critical look at patriarchal structures, familial expectations, and the desire for self-determination. The drama invites a focused engagement with identity, desire, and social belonging.
Shared cinema experience in the shell
The Shell Cinema brings selected films to the auditorium on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University. The series stands for accessible cinema culture, shared experiences, and a unique event atmosphere away from commercial cinemas. The audience's mood arises from the interplay of a large screen, intense storytelling, and the subsequent exchange about what was seen.
